Working Together Getting the Job Done

     1-Last week we did not have any volunteers so we both spent the week at home.  Mark & Cheryl stayed in Johnsonville. At the end of the week all four of us attended the NC Missions Conference in Charlotte & now are back in SC; 2-Our Feeding/Rebuild team from Reg. 9 Swannanoa Baptist Church; 3-Connie, Russell & Marty-Southpoint Baptist, Belmont; 4-Pleasant Ridge Baptist, State Road; 5-Jack, Volunteer coordinator with SC Baptist; 6-Dave & Calvin-Florence Baptist Church, Forrest City; 7-Van, David & Brian cooked the catfish for us that was donated by the Skinning Shed.     Our goal for this week was to do two roof jobs, paint the inside of a house and get a porch and ramp built. With the faithful help of servant minded volunteers it happened.  Pleasant Ridge removed and replaced the shingles on Terry’s home, The Swannanoa team built a deck and ramp as well as replaced some bad siding and started the under skirting at the Ard home. Two of them cooked breakfast and cleaned before going out to the construction site. Ann & Cheryl cooked supper. All the others joined together to install a metal roof for the McCray family.  Then they split up and did lots of painting and other odd jobs.

If you notice we had only two small groups and several one and two person groups (who joined together).  Many times I am asked is there anything I can do as just one person? YES join another person or group and share the gospel as we rebuild South Carolina.

There are still 40 open jobs in the Johnsonville area with new requests still arriving almost each day.  Many ask why so late asking for help?  Well some didn’t realize they had damage due to they have never lived through a flood or 20 inch rain storm that left the ground saturated for four months.  And others didn’t know about our offer to help or are just not use to people they don’t know coming to offer help and only want to share the gospel as they work.

Busy week coming up but have no volunteers for the first week of May as of yet.

Group All the Way From Baraboo, Wisconsin

     1-Mark & Cheryl are back for the month of April; 2-Alma & Brenda, Region 7 Feeding Team; 3-Al from VA; 4-Expeditions Unlimited, Baraboo, WI; 5-Lee’s Chapel, Four Oaks; 6-Swann Station Baptist, Sanford; 7-Calvary Baptist, Monroe.     The volunteer numbers were few for most of the week but on Friday and Saturday many others came.  Each person brought the best tool of all “A LOVE FOR THE LORD” and a desire to share HIS LOVE by helping others.  The Wisconsin group and Al started out the week by finishing one porch and then building another on the side of Thomas and Mary’s home.  After that they went to Leslie’s to finish hanging there sheet rock and started the mudding process.  On Friday the Swain Station group joined us.  They laid the wood flooring at Lynn’s as well as tiled her bath, did some trim work and some trim painting. Three of them went to Betsy’s on Saturday to do the last of the touch up painting.  The group from Calvary came for the day and hung sheet rock at Connie’s.

Betsy’s family was helping her get all her stuff moved back to First Neck on Saturday.  She should be living at her home soon.  She sends a big THANK YOU to each and everyone that has made her return home possible.

The work requests continue to grow in Johnsonville and surrounding area.  We now have 45 open requests for help.  Work ranging from insulating under the home to replacing the roof (metal and shingle).  I know GOD has spoken to many of you to go serve Him by serving His people.  If you feel like you can answer that please call us or go on line to register your time.  We offer day projects, weekend, extended weekend, weekly or what ever amount of time you are will to serve the LORD by helping others.

Last Of The Big Groups For A While

     1-David & Cecil, Calvary Baptist, Newton; 2-Our helpers Sandy, David & Harold here for a second week; 3-Region 6 Feeding Team; 4-Providence Baptist, Raleigh; 5-Bennett & Betsy Cooke, Concord; 6-Hahira UMC, GA with homeowner Ann.     The Georgia group insulated underneath, put up protective covering and under skirted a double wide.  Then they hung some sheet rock.  Their homeowner, Ann, cooked lunch for them three days.  David and Cecil completed two roofs and then completed two porches.  The Cooke’s worked on final sanding and priming at Lynn’s house.  Some of the Providence ladies also helped them paint.  The rest of the Providence group installed a metal roof, painted a roof and built three porches.

This is the last of our large groups for a while.  We are in need of many volunteer teams starting Monday and going through the summer.  At present we have 40 job request waiting.  Roofing, sheet rock, painting, porches and ramps, flooring and lots more jobs.  Give us a call or visit NC Missions to sign up. Dedication of Ms. Betsy’s House

     1 & 2-The highlight of the week was lunch at Ms. Betsy’s house on Thursday and the dedication of her home on Friday.  It was a very emotional day for many as Billy presented her a Bible signed by many of the volunteers; 3-Biltmore Baptist was here for their monthly visit and where able to put the finishing touches on Betsy’s house; 4-Our feeding team was from Region 5; 5-Three young ladies came from Redeemer Hoboken Presbyterian, Hoboken, NJ; 6-Harold & Sandy came to help with Admin and David was here to help Billy; 7-On Wednesday Judy Stone brought a group from Long Branch Baptist, Lumberton.     When rebuilding homes and churches it is cheaper to make a door a special size than to order one.  Tom and Cal have been doing lots of sheet rock work for us.  The Redeemer ladies learned how to install light fixtures, trim paint, cut and install molding.  One of them is actually studying HVAC drafting in school so She joined Gary and Cal for some hands on experience.  The guys laid lots of flooring this week.  Dian and Shelia did sanding, painting and cleaning.   The Lumberton group worked on finishing the shingles at Mary Wilson’s home.

We were able to complete 2 rebuilds this past week but had an additional 5 to come in.  At present time we have 40 owner request for help ranging from steps, insulating, sheet rock, painting to roofing. Let me know when you want to plan your trip.

Great Teams This Week

     1-Seneca Methodist, Seneca, PA plus Bob from Raleigh. Joining us for dinner was Rev. Wendell White from Mt. Moriah Church; 2-Region 4 Feeding Team (the three wearing aprons) plus Garner Baptist Rebuild Group; 3-Ann and the ladies have been attending Lenten Services on Tuesdays across the street at the Methodist Church. They have been enjoying the service and the lunch; 4-Hope Moravian Church, Hope, IN; 5-Seleah helped her granddad Don celebrate his 85th birthday; 6-Trinity Baptist, Raleigh; 7-Our leadership helpers this week, Joyce and Curtis Thrift.     The Seneca team installed a metal roof and then reframed another roof. Their church ladies make prayer blankets which they presented to the home owners. The Hope group did sheet rock finishing, sheet rock and floor repair, hung vinyl siding and then built a porch and ramp.  The other teams finished and built 5 porches and hung more sheet rock.

Due to a touch of the flu for Billy and bronchitis that turned into pneumonia for Ann we tried to stay away from the teams this week.  It was a pleasure to have Curtis and Joyce back to help with the operation again.  We both are feeling lots better now.  Hope to see each of you in Johnsonville soon.  Request for help is coming in faster than jobs being completed.

College Spring Break Week

  1-Ann celebrated her 60th Birthday with a strawberry cake; 2-The Immanuel girls still here; 3-UNC Charlotte BCM; 4-Deep Springs Baptist, Peachland; 5-Perlo-a favorite food in this area; 6-Mt. Vernon Baptist, Boone; 7-Sid & Bettyann Shearin, Littleton Baptist; 8-Larry’s back to do another story on the college kids this time; 9-Region 3 Feeding Team; 10-Eastern Baptist Association.     God again blessed us this week with two groups of college students willing to do what was needed.  With some good leadership they got a lot done. They insulated under three homes, installed under skirting , painted and hung sheet rock. At the end of the week the Eastern Association came down,  They built a back deck, removed two from another home and replaced them,  got almost all the flooring laid at Betsy’s along with painting the doors and trim work.  Deep Springs worked on a porch. The families in the Neck are happy for the help and they fed the teams lunch three days this week.  GOD is opening the doors for his people to spread the gospel.  I pray many will answer the call and sign up to serve in Johnsonville soon.

These teams worked on 3 such jobs. Betsy Humphries, Lynn Marsh and Mt. Moriah Church.  Luthur installed a new water heater in the NCBM camper. Some installed the metal roof on Mt, Moriah while others removed the old windows and installed new ones.  The Riverview team worked at the Marsh home. They completed hanging the sheet rock and started the mud work. Chris Kerslake came down from New Jersey to help get the duct work mostly done. GOD as usual was good and sent a helper for Chris.

The work of rebuilding and sharing the Gospel continues.  Looking forward to many more volunteers coming.

Working On Ms. Betsy’s House

     Our volunteers this week; 1-Biltmore Baptist, Asheville; 2-1st Baptist Norfolk, VA & Calvary Baptist, Newton; 3-Bagley Swamp Wesleyan & Hertford Baptist, Hertford; 4-Macedonia & Williamston Baptist;-5-Reg 1 Feeding Team representing Cornith & Warwick Baptist. Not pictured-Christ Community Church, Pinehurst.     This is Betsy & her granddaughter that lives with her. This is Betsy’s house. Betsy walked in water up to her neck when the area flooded. She was picked up by a motor boat.   The Hertford, Bagley Swamp, Macedonia & Williamston teams spent the week laying flooring, installing cabinets, duct work, doors, trim work as well as plumbing, electric and painting.     The Biltmore team spent the week working on the Marsh home.  They completed the insulation, hung sheet rock and finished the electrical and plumbing rough in.  Tom spent several days at Mt. Moriah Church getting the sheet rock ready to paint.   Billy, Phil and Hollis laid flooring at the Lylery house.     The Bagley Swamp and Calvary groups removed and replaced the shingles on the Jones home.  The Christ Community group built a front porch for the Owens at their new home.   All the teams went out to eat at The Shady Rest on Friday night.

A Short Week

     We didn’t have any volunteers come this week until Thursday so it was a short but good week. 1-Ridgeway Baptist Church, Chandler; 2-Joyce & Curtis Thrift, Pittsboro; 3-Recovery ladies helping make sandwiches for lunch; 4-Austin Grove Baptist Church, Marshville and Union Grove Baptist Church, Monroe.     The Austin and Union Grove group worked at Mt. Moriah Church hanging and finishing sheet rock.  The Ridgeway group worked at the Richardson home.  They removed old floor decking, installed new floor decking and started the front porch. Joyce and Curtis came to do the cooking but Curtis also was a lot of help for Billy.

There are a lot of requests still coming in for help.  We believe GOD is calling for volunteers to come to Johnsonville and work with Him.  Hope to hear from your group soon.  Call Billy or Ann for available dates.

Lots of Work to Be Done in Johnsonville

     1-Tom came down to help out with Chaplincy; 2- The Region 8 feeding team not only cooked and cleaned, the guys also helped with electrical and flooring work; 3-Providence Baptist, Raleigh.  The Providence group split into smaller teams.  The teams worked on replacing wood slats on block walls so sheet rock could be installed and also rescrewed the ceiling sheet rock that had sagged due to a roof leak.  Another group did some touch up mud work and started painting Betsy’s home.  The final group installed a metal roof.

We are still getting new request almost daily.  Teams are starting to sign up but lots more help is needed.  Please contact Ann with your groups requested dates or sign up at NCMissions.org
